Performance notes: in my arranging, I never want to stray too far from the masters of composition. Classics are classics for a reason. I thought Debussy’s Reverie might blend nicely with “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” and as I sat down to experiment, the two pieces seemed destined to be joined together. In this arrangement, they flow together with such ease, beautifully complementing and even interpreting one another.
Yes, this one will take some extra practice and planning. Be intentional about the LH fingering. It will pay off in the long run, and (as always) practice slowly. Also, isolate the snippets from the original composition for concentrated practice (especially 21-35, 42-47, 53-56). Debussy, by his own admission, felt that this piece was pianistically awkward. Nevertheless, history has the final say, and pianists have always loved this piece for its harmonic complexity and athletic challenge. You will, too.
